Travel Tips

Packing Essentials

Expect warm, humid weather with hot temperatures. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for outdoor comfort, but include a jacket for air-conditioned venues. Expect to sweat in non air-conditioned areas due to the humidity, especially in the outdoors, so pack or purchase necessary products to maintain freshness.

Purchasable Essentials: Things to consider buying

The tropics brings about unpredictable weather that changes with little to no warning, so consider purchasing a travel umbrella. Sunscreen and bottle water optional but recommended.

Spending Tips: Digital and Cash

Credit and debit cards, and digital wallets are widely accepted in all malls and restaurants in Singapore. Do note that there are still some local hawker centres and stalls that only accepts cash, usually in the residential districts.

Tipping is not mandatory

  • Tipping is not mandatory: Tipping is generally not expected in Singapore and is not a common practice.
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST): A 9% GST is applied to most goods and services (as of 2024). Check displayed prices and receipts to confirm if GST is included.
  • Service charge: Many restaurants and hotels add a 10% service charge to bills. This is typically stated on the menu or bill. Additional tipping is not required.
  • Street Food: Tipping is not practiced at hawker centres or food courts.
  • Other Services: Tipping taxi drivers, hotel staff, or other service providers is not customary in Singapore.

Tourist Refunds

International visitors who spend over SGD 100 (including GST) in a single day at participating shops can claim GST refunds at Changi Airport before departure. Ensure you keep receipts, and goods remain unused and sealed for eligibility.

Ride-hailing Apps for Tourists

Grab is the most widely used and convenient ride-hailing app for tourists in Singapore. Other major options include Gojek, TADA, Ryde, and ComfortDelGro’s CDG Zig. All these apps support English.

E-wallets to Consider

  • GrabPay (widely accepted)

  • PayNow (local option, often used for peer-to-peer payments)

  • Apple Pay / Google Pay (accepted at most major retailers and restaurants)

  • Alipay and WeChat Pay (accepted at some outlets, especially in tourist areas)

Language: English Proficiency

English is the primary language of business, government, and daily life in Singapore. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, also speaking Mandarin Chinese, Malay, or Tamil.
You will find English signage everywhere, and almost all service staff, taxi drivers, and shopkeepers will speak English fluently.

Visa Requirements

Most nationalities (including US, EU, UK, Australia, and others) receive 30- to 90-day visa-free entry to Singapore. Check the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) website for the latest requirements. An electronic SG Arrival Card submission is required before arrival.
